Now one of Coleraine’s longest-established businesses, S & T Moore, is celebrating its 45th anniversary. The company has prided itself on providing first-class customer service throughout its time trading.
Samuel Moore and brother Trevor decided to go into business back in 1978. Originally from Randalstown, Samuel had gained valuable sales experience while working at Wallace's in Ballymena and Cartmills in Glengormley.
The brothers decided to take a leap of faith as they opened a small shop in Coleraine, initially on Bridge Street.
“I still remember my first sale!" recalled Samuel. “It was a Tweed Sports jacket size 42 Regular.”
As the new venture became a success, larger premises were required, and a move across the street followed in 1984 to the current site of Rocca restaurant.
S & T Moore moved to its current home at 28 Railway Road in 2010.
At a time when a lot of town centre businesses are struggling, what has been the secret behind their success?
“We have always offered good quality brands at realistic prices," continued Samuel.
“We cater for a large array of tastes, designs and styles."
Customer service has also played a leading role in their prosperity, and over the years, Samuel has been fortunate to employ loyal, knowledgeable staff.
"We have excellent staff," Samuel is quick to recognise.
"Billy Clarke has been with me for 29 years, Chris White has been here for 17 years, and Samuel Hyndman completes my superb sales team."
As is the case across the country, Coleraine was once a vibrant shopping destination, bustling with visitors and like many other high streets, it has faced challenges in recent times.
“But we are not unique in that respect, and you just have to adapt to the changing times,” Samuel added.
As is the way of the modern world, S&T Moore has adapted and has an online presence.
However, customers still prefer to come into the shop to browse around and view the merchandise at close quarters.
“Excellent personal service has always been the key. When all the multiples started arriving in Coleraine, I always maintained that independent retailers who did their job correctly would survive, and that's been the case.
“Selection, accessibility and service are the recipe for a town centre's success.
“People want choice, the ability to park and service. ”
With half a century of serving the people of Coleraine looming, Samuel took time to reflect.
"It's hard to believe we have been in Coleraine for 45 years!
“When my wife Jean retired, Patricia Mullan was trained to take over her role, working efficiently behind the scenes, and it is a well-oiled establishment.”
Regular customers continue to be the crux of the business.
"I would like to thank all our customers for your continued support throughout the years and look forward to seeing you in the future."
S & T Moore specialise in schoolwear for boys and girls, as well as a wonderful selection of menswear and shoes from top fashion brands and has a strong reputation for their selection of quality clothing.
