Local Alliance councillors have welcomed a proposal that will see Portstewart Town Hall undergo a major refurbishment, following years of disuse.

News of the refurbishment was revealed by ourselves last night, Explore Causeway Coast & Glens.

Built in 1934, the Town Hall is now a Grade B2 listed building. The proposed development would landmark’s original structure retained, as it is transformed into a dynamic events space and self-catering hostel accommodation.

Speaking on the announcement, Alderman Richard Stewart said, “It's a shame that Portstewart Town Hall has been vacant for so long. It is part of the rich history of the town, dating back to the 1930s, and has always been a focal point at the top of the Promenade.

“Like many in the town, I was worried that it would be lost. So, I am delighted to see these proposals will retain the exterior of the building as we know it, while the interior is transformed into a modern, usable space for the community."

The plans will also see the demolition of the rear return, with it being replaced by a sympathetically designed extension.

“This project represents a significant investment in Portstewart’s future, with additional infrastructure for both local residents and visitors alike,” Cllr McCully added.

“We are seeking a meeting with the developers in the hope work can commence soon, and that we will have a great new community facility, in keeping with the character of the town, in the near future."
