Benny The Bannsider

If you ask most people to name a Bannsider, chances are the first name they’ll mention is Benny. In a rare sit-down, we spoke with Coleraine Football Club’s beloved bear to uncover the passion and personality that makes him such a cherished figure.

Benny’s journey with the Bannsiders began in 2022. While he was born in Stockport, Greater Manchester, Benny moved to the Causeway Coast just days after his birth. Today, he proudly calls himself a lifelong Bannsider.

When asked what initially drew him to Coleraine Football Club, Benny reflected with heartfelt nostalgia. “I’ve never known anything different. From the moment I met the Bannsider family—players, supporters, volunteers—I could sense that sense of belonging. Being part of something that brings positivity to the community makes me feel connected to this place. And now, I’ve got so many friends.”

Football, as any fan knows, is a rollercoaster of emotions. Coleraine has enjoyed many highs—victories in Cup Finals, battles for the Championship, and consistent success in the Sports Direct Premiership. But, is it ever straightforward? Benny doesn’t sugar-coat it. “My first game was a League Cup Final at the National Stadium—a high point, for sure. But it isn’t always like that. Sport comes with its frustrations and lows, but those tough times make the great moments even more special.”

Benny isn’t just a familiar sight on match days at Coleraine Showgrounds. He’s often seen out in the community—visiting schools, community groups, and local businesses. So, does he relish the spotlight? “Absolutely! It’s not about being an extrovert; I just love sharing the Bannsider spirit. Seeing people’s faces light up when a six-foot bear walks into their classroom or workplace—it’s priceless. They always smile, laugh, and grab a photo.”

Match days hold a special place in Benny’s heart. “Hearing the crowd cheer for the team, seeing their passion—it’s electrifying. You can tell how much it means to the players; it’s a real boost. We’re all in it together, striving for victory.”

But being Northern Ireland’s most famous mascot must take its toll. So, how does Benny unwind? “I have two big passions outside of football—one’s quite ordinary, and the other’s a bit peculiar. I love music—I play the guitar and sing a bit. And then there’s my not-so-secret hobby: driving a bin wagon. Strange, I know, but there’s something satisfying about keeping our homes and the North Coast clean. It’s oddly fulfilling!”

Want to meet Benny the Bannsider yourself? You’ll find him at the next Coleraine home game at the Showgrounds on Sunday, November 24th. Kick-off is at 12:30, and tickets are available at colerainefc.com/ticketing.
