Causeway Coast & Glens Council planners have given the go-ahead for the construction of two whiskey maturation warehouses, along with a forklift charging building, storage container, access road, car park, hardstanding yard, and associated works at Lands immediately west of units 15 and 20 Aghanloo Industrial Estate, Aghanloo Road, Limavady.
This significant development comes in response to the growing demand for long-term whiskey storage, spurred by the rise in new distilleries across Ireland and Northern Ireland. Whiskey maturation is a time-intensive process, typically requiring a minimum of ten years to achieve the desired quality and flavour.
The proposed warehouses, spearheaded by Mill Cask Ltd, are designed to store up to 27,700 casks, with each warehouse capable of holding 13,850 casks. This ambitious initiative highlights the company's dedication to bolstering the thriving whiskey industry in the region.
Beyond meeting storage needs, the new facilities are poised to boost the local economy by creating jobs and drawing tourists and whiskey aficionados to Limavady. This development not only supports the whiskey sector but also showcases the region's growing reputation as a key player in the global spirits market.
