Council to consider registering its involvement in D Day 80 by lighting a beacon at the War Memorial
Nov 22, 2023In a move to honour the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, a report will be presented to Councillors next week to propose a beacon lighting ceremony at the War Memorial on 6th June 2024 in Coleraine.
The event aims to commemorate the historic day that played a pivotal role in ending World War II and to pay tribute to those who fought for the freedoms we cherish today.
The D-Day 80 commemoration is a nationwide initiative, involving various regions across the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, and UK Overseas Territories. Coleraine’s participation was influenced by the official guide from pageantmaster Bruno Peek, which details a range of activities for the landmark anniversary.
Causeway Coast & Glens Council is considering a proposal to light a beacon at 9:15 pm on the day, accompanied by the recitation of the International Tribute. This gesture is meant to express gratitude for eight decades of peace and freedom since the end of the war.
Council's plan, as recommended, involves inviting His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant, along with the Mayor / Deputy Mayor, to officiate the beacon lighting.
The Royal British Legion is also expected to play a significant role in the ceremony, emphasising the event's historical and commemorative significance.
In addition to dignitaries, elected members will be invited, and the event will be open to the public and promoted through the Council’s media channels. The Democratic Services team of the Council will coordinate the event, ensuring compliance with health, safety, and public event regulations.
