‘Magical Coleraine’ Christmas Experience

Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council have taken the first step towards creating a new festive attraction in Coleraine.

At last night's Leisure & Development council meeting, members agreed to investigate the feasibility of hosting a “Magical Coleraine” Christmas event, aiming to mirror the success of initiatives such as Kilkenny’s Yule Fest and Antrim’s Enchanted Winter Garden.

Councillor Anderson proposed the motion and said the event could offer residents and tourists a unique seasonal experience. He suggested utilising the historic Market Yard and ensuring local families benefit from reduced-rate admission—similar to schemes used by neighbouring councils.

Backing the plan, Councillor Stirling highlighted the potential economic boost for the town, saying a Christmas market and related festivities would showcase local artisans and businesses while attracting visitors from throughout Northern Ireland.

Council will now carry out a scoping exercise to assess the costs and logistics of expanding Coleraine’s Christmas programme. The director of the Leisure & Development Committee also signalled the possibility of tapping into the Coleraine Future Town Board’s new funding streams, which will be discussed at its first meeting on 30th January.

A three-month community consultation will potentially follow, giving residents a chance to voice their views and shape the event’s development. Councillor Anderson clarified that any new celebration should complement, rather than replace, other festive gatherings across the borough.

If approved, the proposed “Magical Coleraine” could become an annual fixture to foster community spirit and stimulate economic growth in the heart of the town.

Further details are expected in the weeks ahead.
