Council Unanimously Passes Motion Honouring Joey Dunlop OBE MBE

At last night's full council meeting, elected representatives from all parties united to commemorate local motorcycle racing legend and Freeman of the Borough, Joey Dunlop OBE MBE.

A motion brought forward by Councillor Mervyn Storey and seconded by Alderman John McAuley highlighted the upcoming 25th anniversary of Dunlop’s passing.

The motion recognised Joey Dunlop’s enduring influence on motorcycle racing. It proposed that the council, in conjunction with his family, mark this milestone in a way that suitably honours his life and legacy.

The motion read; "2025 marks the 25th Anniversary of the sad passing of Joey Dunlop OBE MBE, a legend in motorcycle racing and a citizen and Freeman of our Borough of whom we are rightly proud. It is therefore fitting that we remember this anniversary in conjunction with his family in a way that reflects our appreciation for  the life, legacy and memory of Joey Dunlop OBE MBE."

Councillors across all parties supported the motion, underscoring their collective appreciation for the late sportsman’s achievements and contribution to the Borough.
