Councillor Tanya Stirling will raise a crucial question under 'any other business' tomorrow evening at the Leisure and Development Committee meeting.

Following the International North West 200's success this year, she will question its long-term future and funding strategies.

The NW200, one of Northern Ireland's most prestigious motorcycle road races, faced significant uncertainty last year. Weeks of tense negotiations and public concern culminated in the event proceeding as planned, thanks to a negotiated, lower insurance deal.

Councillor Stirling’s questions will follow last week's North West 200, which was lauded as a resounding success. The event drew a substantial crowd and highlighted the region's capacity to host world-class sporting events, significantly boosting local tourism and the economy.

"The NW200 is not just a motorcycle race," Councillor Stirling said. "It is a vital part of our cultural and economic landscape. It brings thousands of visitors to our area, showcasing Northern Ireland to global audiences. The government's past support is appreciated, but as the event grows, so do its needs. We must consider more robust, sustainable funding to ensure its continued success."

The government has historically provided some support for the NW200, recognising its role in promoting tourism and elevating Northern Ireland's profile on the international stage. However, a growing sentiment is that more comprehensive and consistent backing is required. The event's global reach and local economic impact underscore the need for a strategic approach to its funding and development.

Councillor Stirling's questions will likely spark an essential discussion on the future of the NW200.

Her advocacy for increased support reflects a broader recognition of the event's significance. As the NW200 continues to grow in stature, the focus must be on ensuring its sustainability and ability to thrive amid increasing logistical and financial challenges.
