Former JJB Sports Unit in Coleraine Set for Transformation into Padel Courts

A long-vacant retail unit in Coleraine, formerly occupied by JJB Sports, could soon be given a new lease of life. Powerhouse Padel Ltd has submitted plans to transform the empty space at 52 Hanover Place into indoor padel courts and associated facilities.

The proposals mark a potential revival for the site, which has remained unused for several years. In addition to the change of use application, Powerhouse Padel Ltd has also applied for permission to install new retail signage, including an illuminated main gantry sign, a gable sign, and two window vinyl graphics.

In addition to padel courts, the facility will be designed to support various other sports and activities, offering something for everyone:

  • Adaptable to diverse age groups: From children and young adults to older generations, the venue will cater to all groups, providing recreational opportunities such as casual play, competitive tournaments, and fitness classes.
  • Accessibility for people with disabilities: The design will ensure that the space is fully accessible, including wheelchair-friendly courts, changing facilities, and transportation options.
  • Supporting infrastructure: A café, changing rooms, and ancillary facilities will further enhance the appeal of the venue, making it a hub for socialising and community engagement. Additionally, spectator seating and high-quality lighting will improve the viewing experience for competitive events.

Padel, a racquet sport that combines elements of tennis and squash, has surged in popularity globally, with over 30 million players worldwide. High-profile enthusiasts of the sport include David Beckham, Serena Williams, and even French President Emmanuel Macron.

The sport is played on a court approximately a third the size of a standard tennis court and typically features doubles play. Unlike tennis racquets, padel racquets are solid and have no strings, and players serve underarm. The courts are enclosed, allowing the ball to bounce off the walls, similar to squash. Padel balls are slightly smaller than tennis balls.

A spokesperson for Coleraine Business Improvement District (BID) welcomed the potential development, saying:

“This is an exciting opportunity to breathe new life into a long-vacant unit within Coleraine. Padel is a rapidly growing sport, and having dedicated indoor courts here in Coleraine would be a fantastic addition to our local leisure offering. It’s great to see investment and innovation coming to the area.”

A supporting planning statement says - 'The transformation of the JJB Sports building in Coleraine into an inclusive, year-round padel facility will provide an invaluable recreational space for the Causeway Coast and Glens community. With its focus on accessibility, sustainability, and adaptability, this facility will enhance the region’s sporting infrastructure, foster social connections, and contribute positively to public health and well-being. By leveraging the location’s town centre advantages and aligning with local planning and regeneration policies, this project will play a vital role in the sustainable growth of Coleraine, encouraging both economic development and social inclusion."
