John Hewitt Bursary recipients congratulated by Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens
Aug 13, 2024A group of talented upcoming writers from the Borough, who were recently awarded John Hewitt Bursaries, have been congratulated by the Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens.
The awards were allocated by Council earlier this year and allowed 4 successful recipients from the Borough to attend the John Hewitt Society International Summer School.
The Mayor, Councillor Ciarán McQuillan welcomed those who were able to attend to a reception saying: “Congratulations to the 4 local writers for being selected for Council’s John Hewitt Bursary.
“It was interesting to talk to these writers today and hear about how the bursary support and attendance at the writing school has helped them. The Arts sector is one that cannot be underestimated, and I look forward to seeing how their careers progress into the future.”
The Society provides opportunities for individuals from across Northern Ireland to explore issues of difference and identity through literature and creative writing and support from Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council allows residents of the Brough to apply for this valuable support each year.
Alderman Yvonne Boyle who attended the reception said: “It was great to be at the John Hewitt Society International Summer School and to meet the 4 Causeway Coast and Glens bursary holders.
“I am pleased to have put forward the original motion to Council to support the bursaries, seconded by the former Alderman Joan Baird, and proud to continue to be involved and am indebted to the Council for supporting these bursaries.
“It was a stimulating week of talks and discussion, the theme of which could not be more relevant, ‘to live among strangers’, diversity and a shared future’
“I think it's important that writers in this area are encouraged in their journey towards expression and publication and I am proud to be involved in this scheme.”
This is the second-year bursaries have been provided for attendees to the summer school and the successful recipients, were each delighted to have been given the opportunity to develop their writing skills.
Dr Frank Ferguson Chair of the John Hewitt Society and Research Director - English Language and Literature Ulster University added: “On behalf of the John Hewitt Society, we’re really pleased with the bursary scheme that Causeway Coast and Glens provides for us.
“This is a really important boost to what we do, and it provides brilliant people and hopefully offers a chance for new writers to get an opportunity to learn about the world of writing and to give back to the community and indeed the world as new writers.”
