RAF Dome Gets New Life as a Multi-Purpose Community Hub

A historic wartime landmark is set to be transformed into a vibrant community events space in Limavady.

Plans were approved earlier this week to repurpose the only remaining RAF Trainer Dome on the island of Ireland – one of just six in the United Kingdom.

Constructed in 1942 as part of a pioneering gunnery training facility during the Second World War, the dome was at the forefront of audio-visual simulation for anti-aircraft gunners. The proposed development, which forms part of the Defence Heritage Project, aims to celebrate the structure’s storied past while adapting it for modern use.

Central to the proposal is a ‘curated decay’ approach. This strategy seeks to retain the dome’s authentic historical character, even as a new structural steel shell is introduced to stabilise the fragile building. Alongside essential electrical upgrades, improved access paths from Dowland Road – including vehicular and pedestrian routes, an access road and eight parking spaces – will ensure the site is accessible to the community.

A complementary modular structure, inspired by the form of wartime Nissen huts, will be added to house an office, accessible WC, and a store. Inside the dome, the interior is set to be reimagined as a flexible space suitable for a range of events, complete with 360-degree projection capabilities that will enhance historical exhibitions and creative projects.

The careful landscaping plan, designed with low-impact materials, seeks to enhance the setting while respecting the site's heritage and archaeological importance. This development not only honours a significant chapter in the region’s past but also breathes new life into the historic structure, ensuring it remains a valued community asset for years to come.

The applicant was Causeway Coast & Glens Heritage Trust.
