May Hezlet - Royal Portrush - The Open 2025

The Ulster History Circle plans to honour the legacy of celebrated golfer May Hezlet with a blue plaque at Royal Portrush Golf Club in 2025.

The proposal, due for consideration by the Leisure & Development Committee, aligns with the return of the Open Championship to the club. It is recommended that approval is granted by both the Committee and full Council to accept the nomination of May Hezlet as the recipient of the Ulster History Blue Plaque for 2025.

Hezlet, who hailed from Bovagh House, Aghadowey, achieved remarkable success, becoming the youngest winner of the British Ladies Open Amateur Championship at just 17 in 1899 and claiming the title twice more.

She also won the Irish Championship five times and authored "Ladies Golf" in 1904.

The initiative reflects a continued collaboration between the council and the Ulster History Circle, commemorating individuals who have contributed significantly to Ulster’s heritage.

The council's engagement will support annual plaque installations under a partnership established in 2023 at a cost of £1,500 per annum.

This plaque installation aims to celebrate Hezlet’s sporting achievements and historical ties to the region, coinciding with an internationally prestigious event.
