McAtamney's Traditional Butchers' Journey to Success
May 09, 2023Celebrations are in full swing at McAtamney’s Traditional Butchers as they hit the big 9-0! Founded in Kilrea back in1933 by John McAtamney, the company is now led by his grandson, Oran, and his two sons, Mark and Declan.
With 14 stores across the region and the newest one opening in Hillcrest Eurospar in Portrush, McAtamney’s has come a long way from its humble beginnings.
Not only is the team celebrating 90 years in business, they've also received recognition for their contribution to their local communities.
Oran was recently awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Mid-Ulster Business Awards, an honour that had him both shocked and thrilled.
Oran has been leading the way in the butchery trade since a young age, learning his skills and trade from his grandfather and father. With over 150 employees, including highly-skilled butchers, boners, chefs, prep teams in the purpose-built development kitchen and head office staff, McAtamney’s is a true testament to Oran's dedication to the butchery trade and his employees.
Some staff have worked with Oran for over 25 years, which is a rarity these days and a strong indication of Oran's dedication to his staff and the butchery trade.
When they say like father, like sons, it perfectly sums up Oran and his boys. Mark and Declan have learned and perfected their trade over the years, now advancing to running the daily operations of the business.
They have also been making waves in the industry, receiving the Employer of the Future accolade at the Causeway Coast & Glens People awards.
As a traditional family business that has been around for many years, to be recognised for their vision and innovation for the future, they were truly honoured.
With the mix of Oran's experience and knowledge of the butchery trade, and Mark and Declan's dedication, ambition and enthusiasm, the McAtamney team are excited for what is yet to come.
Their hardworking and dedicated staff are the backbone of the business, and one shining example is Anton, the Ballymoney Store manager who was a finalist in the Employee of the Year category at the Causeway awards, an achievement which Oran and the team believe was very much deserved.
The Coleraine store recently received a makeover both in store and externally, bringing it in line with the new look branding that's been rolled out - have you spotted it yet?
As McAtamney's gears up to celebrate 90 years in business, keep your eyes peeled for some great giveaways and treats in all stores.
This family-run business has come a long way and they're just getting started!
