Merrow Hotel and Spa Gets Green Light After Nine-Year Battle
Mar 26, 2025
After nine years of legal wrangling, planning delays, and local controversy, the Merrow Hotel and Spa in Portstewart has finally been granted full planning permission next to the NW200 paddock on Ballyreagh Road.
The £20 million luxury resort is now set to go ahead—bringing a major economic boost to the Causeway Coast area.
The development will create 100 jobs and is expected to inject £5.5 million annually into the local economy from high-spending visitors. Plans include a 119-bedroom hotel, a high-end spa, conference facilities, holiday cottages, a restaurant, and dedicated office space for the North West 200 team.
The approval marks the end of a long and often contentious process—and the beginning of a new chapter for the Causeway Coast & Glens tourism and hospitality sector.
The project has garnered broad support, including endorsements from various political parties and backing from organisations such as Taste Causeway, Causeway Chamber of Commerce, Retail NI, and Hospitality Ulster.
Shortly after the decision this morning, Maurice Bradley MLA said, "I wish to express my support for the proposed Hotel and Spa Complex at Ballyreagh Road, Portstewart.
"This is a significant development that will substantially benefit the area. The proposal includes conference and banqueting facilities, holiday cottages, and a dedicated visitor attraction celebrating the North West 200. It also features a demonstration restaurant and essential infrastructure works.
"Notably, the inclusion of exhibition and retail space linked to the North West 200 represents a major boost for what is a globally recognised sporting event hosted in our Borough. This will not only enhance the prestige and popularity of the races but also serve as a valuable attraction for tourists and visitors to the north coast. Once operational, the development is expected to support local producers and further strengthen the region’s tourism offering.
"This application presents a major economic opportunity for Portstewart and the wider Causeway Coast and Glens area. Given that tourism is one of the largest employers in the region, this project will significantly enrich what we can offer to visitors.
"In my view, today’s approval marks the end of unnecessary delays that have hindered progress. This investment stands to deliver long-term benefits in tourism, employment, and economic growth.
"I commend the applicants for their perseverance and patience in bringing this much-needed project to fruition."
