National Trust Proposes Ticket Booth Addition to Giant's Causeway Car Park
Apr 29, 2024To enhance the visitor experience and improve working conditions for staff, the National Trust has submitted plans to Causeway Coast & Glens Borough Council to add a ticket booth at the Giant's Causeway Visitor Centre car park.
The proposal outlines the construction of a ticket booth on an existing area of hard landscaping within the car park. This strategic positioning aims to seamlessly integrate the booth into the current layout without disrupting visitors' traffic flow.
A design and access statement says that "The staff who provide tickets currently wait by the car park entrance to provide tickets to visitors who wish to use the car park. The Natural Trust have now deemed this as unsustainable for the workers as they would have to stand outside for long hours, particularly in cold or wet weather."
As the booth will be located within the direct vicinity of the Visitor Centre, inspiration has been taken from the colour scheme and form but applied to the context of a ticket booth.
Chunky, charred timber battens will be attached to the ticket booth, extending out from the elevation, and effectively reflecting the black, stone mullions that populate the façade of the Visitor Centre.
The proposed development aligns with the National Trust's commitment to preserving natural heritage sites and enhancing visitor experiences. By addressing staff needs and optimising visitor facilities, the Trust seeks to uphold the Giant's Causeway's status as a world-renowned tourist destination while ensuring sustainable management practices.
The application will be heard by the council's planning committee in the coming months.
