The National Trust has submitted a planning application to Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council to perform stabilisation and general consolidation works on the Mausoleum at Downhill Demense in Castlerock.

The Grade B+ listed monument is in a state of ruin, particularly in the upper-level masonry, due to historical collapse. The proposed repairs address the most deteriorated areas and consolidate the structure.

A planning statement reads “Proposed works include the installation of stitching anchors to restrain or consolidate displaced columns, the removal of corroding iron cramps and pinning of affected stone. Consolidation of stone via rebedding and pointing will also be undertaken, along with removal of vegetation and inspection of collapsed high level columns to assess stability."

The application will be heard later this year at Council's planning committee.
