North West 200 To Join VE Day Commemorations
Feb 05, 2025
In December 2024, concerns arose about a potential scheduling conflict between VE Day anniversary events and the North West 200 road races, planned for 8th May 2025.
This evening, members of the Commemoration and Celebration Subcommittee meeting took a significant step towards ensuring both events can proceed smoothly, with North West 200 Event Director Mervyn Whyte in attendance.
Mr. Whyte expressed the North West 200's strong desire to participate in the VE Day commemorations, a sentiment echoed by their title sponsor, Briggs Equipment. Discussions focused on how the two events could complement each other.
A draft program for the VE Day celebrations on May 8th was reviewed, which we published last week, outlining a range of activities, including exhibitions, a remembrance service, and entertainment.
The challenge lies in coordinating these events with the North West 200's race schedule, culminating in races on the evening of the 8th.
Mr. Whyte presented several ideas, including a tribute at the start of the first race, potentially incorporating a moment of silence and the national anthem. He also suggested a flypast before the race and offered the use of military vehicles for display.
The committee acknowledged the complexities of aligning the two schedules, particularly the timing of the Act of Remembrance and the church bells ringing with the races. However, there was a shared commitment to finding solutions that would allow both events to flourish.
"We're keen to work together to make this a truly memorable occasion," said Mr. Whyte. "We want to play our part in the VE Day celebrations and ensure that both the commemoration and the North West 200 are a success."
Further discussions are planned, with a follow-up meeting scheduled for 19th February 2025.
The Commemoration and Celebration Subcommittee meeting remains optimistic that a mutually beneficial arrangement can be reached, ensuring a fitting tribute to VE Day while accommodating the popular North West 200.
