Pedal Power: Local pair take on epic 1,000-mile cycle for charities

Two local men are gearing up for an ambitious challenge this April, raising funds for two remarkable charities.

Brian McKeown, owner of John Laverty Optometrists, and his cousin Graeme Irwin will be cycling from Land's End to John O'Groats, a daunting journey of approximately 1,000 miles.

This epic cycle will take place over nine days, and both have committed to rigorous training to ensure their success. "We both enjoy cycling as part of our fitness routine," Brian said in an interview with CQ.

"During the winter months, we’ve been putting in the miles on indoor bikes to boost our fitness. Recently, we’ve taken our training outdoors together, and it’s been a great experience."

While they are feeling strong, Brian noted the importance of proper nutrition: "We’ve realised that fueling ourselves correctly is crucial for this challenge."

The pair are raising funds for Macmillan and Guide Dogs for the Blind. Brian said, "We recently lost an uncle to cancer, and it hits close to home.

"We all know someone affected by this disease.

"Macmillan offers vital hope and support to those dealing with cancer, and they are dedicated to doing everything possible for those in need."

Additionally, he spoke of the great work done by the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association, which helps visually impaired individuals live more independent lives with the support of a guide dog.

Operating from John Laverty's new clinic on Abbey Street, Brian expressed a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has supported their fundraising efforts so far. You can still sponsor them through their JustGiving page. https://www.justgiving.com/page/brianandgraeme
