Pickleball... what's all the racket about?

tourism Apr 07, 2025

There’s an exciting new sport taking the North Coast by storm—pickleball! This American sport combines elements of badminton, tennis, and ping pong, and has been introduced to the Causeway Coast and Glens area by the Council’s Sports Development team.

We caught up with Council’s Sports Development Manager Johnny McFadden to get the inside scoop. Johnny plays a crucial role in developing sports programs that make a positive impact on the community, particularly in the areas of disability sports and engaging older adults.

“Players use paddles to hit a perforated plastic ball over a net—that’s the essence of pickleball,” Johnny joked.

“It’s played on a badminton-sized court with a 34-inch net and can be enjoyed in singles or doubles. Everyone who has tried it locally has absolutely loved it!”

Johnny outlined the benefits, “Pickleball offers many benefits including improved health, enhanced hand-eye coordination, greater mental well-being, and increased social connection.

“It’s a low-impact exercise, it also promotes bone health and joint maintenance, but most importantly, it’s a bit of fun!”

He went on to share the success of the program: “Council has successfully introduced Pickleball as a key part of our Active Life program, available in five areas of the Borough: Coleraine Leisure Centre, Joey Dunlop Leisure Centre, Roe Valley Leisure Centre, Dungiven Sports Centre, and Sheskburn Recreation Centre.

“Participants have really embraced it, and many are now playing outside of the structured programs.”

“January 2025 marked our first-ever festival at Coleraine Leisure Centre, featuring six pairs of beginners and six experienced pairs as part of our Active Life initiative.

“Having 24 players at our inaugural festival was a fantastic achievement!

“We’re already gearing up for more events in March at Coleraine Leisure Centre and planning additional festival dates throughout 2025, along with a dedicated program for young people.”

If you’re ready to join in the fun keep a check on Council's socials for the next taster sessions or contact your local leisure centre. The Sport NI Community Planning Investment Programme works with local councils to provide funding for residents to get active and take part in physical activity. The funding helped facilitate the Pickleball Festivals run by the council in Coleraine.
