The creation of a unique Lidl concept shop in Coleraine, which we exclusively revealed earlier this year, has been approved by planners.

The application, which will be reviewed by the planning committee on Wednesday, October 25th, represents a big step forward in the retailer's expansion and remodelling strategy.

This Lidl effort entails major refurbishment of multiple existing stores as well as the construction of new ones.

The redevelopment of the Lidl branches in Limavady and Ballymoney within the Borough attests to the program's effectiveness.

Lidl's application articulates the need for expansion due to the inadequacies of its current premises, proposing a larger 2,475sqm facility built to better satisfy the expectations and comfort of its clientele and personnel.

The proposal comprises moving the Lidl supermarket to Unit 17 and adjoining vacant land, Riverside Regional Centre, Riverside Park North, Coleraine.

Additional improvements include the enlargement of the current parking area, with designs showing 132 parking spaces bordering the front and side of the new Lidl site.

Notably, the bulk of these slots will be larger than standard size, which is a deliberate tactic to improve accessibility and consumer convenience. The inclusion of two electric car charging stations emphasises the project's futuristic approach.

The store, one of Lidl's innovative concept concepts, will have a sleek, expansive architectural plan aimed at providing a better shopping experience. In addition, the store will provide modern amenities for employee wellness, such as showers, a locker room, and a canteen, among other things.

Sustainability is central to the design, as evidenced by the incorporation of PV panels, electric vehicle charging stations, bicycle racks, and the use of energy and water-saving fixtures. The building's design, which includes long-lasting and energy-efficient components as well as ample storage space, minimises the frequency of product delivery.

This endeavour represents a significant financial investment in the Borough, with the construction and outfitting of the new Lidl shop costing approximately £4.5 million. The store promises to keep 40 jobs, including 18 new positions and an extra 22 responsibilities transferred from the current location.

Subject to approval, the existing Lidl structure is set to be divided into two independent entities, one for large-scale goods retail and the other for Class B4 storage and distribution, though possible occupants for these forthcoming units are unknown.
