Torr Head - Viewing Point

A planning application has been submitted to Causeway Coast & Glens Borough Council, proposing the development of a remarkable viewing point amenity facility on Torr Road, Cushendun.

The proposed facility aims to offer visitors a unique experience, complete with a public car park, comfortable seating areas, and additional ancillary facilities.

The chosen site for this project is along the renowned Torr Road, known for its status as the Torr Head Scenic Route, a designation bestowed by the Tourism Board. The location boasts awe-inspiring surroundings, showcasing breathtaking landscapes that include panoramic views of the sea, stunning coastal headlands, and the rolling Glens of Antrim.

A design and access statement says "The site sits within a location that is already a substantial tourism attraction in its own right due to the magnificent landscape and sea views while also leading to visitor attractions such as Torr Head, Murlough Bay, Fair Head Cliffs and connecting back to the remainder of the coastal route carting visitors to other main attractions such as the Giant’s Causeway; Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge; the Dark Hedges; Dunluce Castle; Mussenden Temple; as well as world-renowned golf courses; heritage villages and towns; and a number of blue flag beaches including but not limited to Benone, Castlerock, Downhill, Portstewart Strand etc."

The statement further says "A conscientious approach has been applied to this development as it is the need to provide an off-road parking area that has fuelled the main reason behind the application.  The proposal has been submitted in the interest of road safety and to provide a tourism amenity space that is fit for purpose at a location that tourists and visitors regularly stop at to capture the spectacular views. The proposal will actually help with the free flow of traffic along this stretch of Torr Road and also put an end to field entrances being blocked by vehicles. Adequate sight splays and forward sight distance will be provided in accordance with the accompanying plans."

The applicant is - Liam Hamilton
