Full Plans Submitted For Ballymoney Rugby Club Expansion
Oct 10, 2024A full planning application has been submitted to Causeway Coast & Glens Borough Council for the proposed expansion of Ballymoney Rugby Club. The expansion aims to enhance facilities and accommodate the community's growing needs.
The development plans include transforming existing farmlands to accommodate three new grass pitches and practice areas. Improvements to existing access routes and the creation of an all-weather parking area are also part of the proposal. The project seeks to consolidate pitches and surfaces at lands to the south and southeast adjoining 63 Kilraughts Road, Ballymoney.
A public exhibition and drop-in session were held at Ballymoney Rugby Club on Tuesday, 4 June 2024, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A member of the design team was present to discuss the proposal and address any queries from attendees. Members of the public were encouraged to provide both oral and written feedback on the plans.
Ten individuals provided feedback through the project's webpage, and six people attended the drop-in event, including Alderman John McAuley.
Community Support
Feedback from the community has been overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the club's role as a vital hub in Ballymoney. One resident commented: "I believe this would be a great step forward for both the rugby club and the community of Ballymoney. The rugby club is one of those hubs bringing people together and providing a sense of local pride and commonality. Therefore, I would be pleased to see this approved and a well-respected sport and hub of the town safeguarded."
Another supporter noted: "This expansion represents a significant and exciting development both for the club and existing community. Having more pitches will enable further growth of not just the senior men's but also the ladies and junior sections."
The need for additional facilities was a common theme among respondents. With the club's growing membership—including multiple youth and female teams—the existing pitches are reportedly stretched thin. One individual stated: "Will benefit the local community greatly as the club has a lack of pitches with the amount of youth teams now training on the current pitches along with multiple female teams also using the pitches now."
Looking Ahead
The proposed expansion aims to accommodate the club's increasing demand and support its diverse and inclusive membership. Improvements to parking facilities are expected to alleviate on-street parking concerns during large events and matches.
The planning application is now under review by the council. If approved, the development will not only enhance the rugby club's facilities but also contribute positively to the Ballymoney community.
