Portrush : The Future of Station Square's Skate Space Hangs in the Balance

Station Square Portrush - Geoffrey Moffett

Portrush, known for its scenic beauty and vibrant community, has arrived at a critical juncture regarding the future of its skateboarding area at Station Square.

Introduced as a temporary solution to accommodate local and visiting skateboarders, the designated space has become a topic of discussion for the Council, community members, and stakeholders involved.

In October 2022, Council gave the green light to create a temporary skateboarding space at Station Square, Portrush. This decision was made to provide a safe and controlled environment for skateboarders while ensuring public access to nearby businesses and establishing the Rights of Way.

The arrangement was backed by a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) involving various parties responsible for the site's management and maintenance, including providing public liability insurance and ensuring the safety of the skateboarding equipment.

As the 12-month MOU term has concluded without a mid-term review, the Council now faces decisions on how to proceed.

RAWEE, initially responsible for weekly site inspections and equipment safety, has stepped back due to business commitments, though they remain open to offering advisory support. This change has led to sporadic Working Group meetings and raised concerns about the continuity of site maintenance and safety checks.

Stakeholders' feedback highlights the skateboarding space's value in Station Square, citing it as a safe and enjoyable place for locals and visitors. However, concerns have been raised regarding the general upkeep of the area, the need for more bins, and enhanced signage for pedestrian safety.

Following RAWEE's withdrawal from their MOU responsibilities, the absence of regular oversight has prompted suggestions that members of the Working Group would be content to liaise directly with Council and report any maintenance/health & safety issues.

The existing equipment, primarily wooden ramps intended for indoor use, has suffered from weather exposure, necessitating ongoing repairs and raising safety concerns. Unsanctioned structures built by locals have also appeared, and more quality control is needed in construction. The estimated cost to replace the ramps and possibly extend official facilities is around £10,000.

Despite completing the Urban Plaza at Portrush Recreation Grounds, Station Square continues to attract skateboarders, underscoring its importance within the community.

The Council has also supported Causeway Association of Urban Sports' efforts to develop a Skateboard/Urban plaza at Metropole Park, subject to funding.

Facing the expiration of the MOU and considering the future of Station Square's skateboarding space, the Council must decide whether to:

  • Continue the designated space with a revised MOU and find a new party for site checks and monitoring.
  • Assume full responsibility for site management to maintain safety and upkeep.
  • Revert Station Square to its original public thoroughfare state, with no guarantees against continued skateboarding activity.

Councillors on the Leisure & Development Committee will be tasked next week with weighing these options to support the skateboarding community while ensuring public safety and access.

The decision will affect the local skateboarding scene and reflect on the Council's commitment to promoting active lifestyles and community engagement in Portrush.
