Portstewart Town Hall

The historic Portstewart Town Hall, a Grade B2 listed building on the North Coast, is set for a major refurbishment and extension under new plans to restore it to its former prominence.

The proposed development will see the iconic 1934 Modernist building transformed into a multi-purpose events space, complemented by self-catering hostel accommodation. The plans also include the demolition of the current rear return, which will be replaced with a sympathetically designed modern extension, ensuring the building’s future relevance while respecting its architectural heritage.

Vacant since 2019, the Town Hall occupies a prime location at the junction of The Crescent and The Promenade, overlooking the town’s coastline. Designed by architect Benjamin Cowser following an architectural competition, the building has served as a civic centre, community hub, and performance venue throughout its history.

Balancing Modern Use with Heritage

Gravis Planning, the consultancy behind the application, emphasised that the renovation seeks to retain and enhance the building’s remaining original features while carefully introducing new design elements. Features such as the wrought iron balcony will be reinstated, echoing the building’s original grandeur.

The proposed extension takes inspiration from the existing structure, incorporating a muted palette of materials to harmonise with the main building. Pre-application discussions with the Historic Environment Division have ensured the plans are sympathetic to neighbouring listed landmarks, such as the adjacent Star of the Sea Church.

A Community Revival

Portstewart Town Hall’s restoration marks a significant step towards revitalising the area. The inclusion of modern event facilities and group accommodation aims to attract schools, church groups, and local organisations, aligning with Portstewart’s reputation as a popular seaside destination.

The plans also prioritise sustainability and accessibility, with level access entrances and cycle parking to encourage eco-friendly travel.

Preserving Local Identity

For many residents, the Town Hall symbolises Portstewart’s heritage. Once described as "a distinctive architectural feature" by the Belfast Newsletter in 1934, the building has stood as a testament to the town’s ambition to become one of Ireland’s key coastal resorts.
