Rising Bills Put Council Events Under The Microscope

A series of tourism events in the local council area may face changes soon as rising safety, medical, and traffic management costs tighten budgets.

Council officials say more than a third of some event expenditures now go towards essential non-programme elements, including first aid provision and crowd control measures.

Events such as the popular Halloween celebrations are coming under particular scrutiny. With the event costs surpassing £80,000, some councillors have questioned whether alternative spectacles—such as drone light shows—might be considered to reduce noise, environmental impact, and expense. Council officers, however, note that fireworks remain highly popular and continue to draw large crowds.

Meanwhile, the Salmon and Whiskey Festival is on track to expand, potentially spanning multiple days to meet public demand. Marketing efforts will be bolstered across all events, ensuring the public is well-informed about upcoming programmes and activities.

Staffing pressures have also emerged as a pressing issue. The team overseeing these events is reported to be relatively small for such a large geographical area, with members regularly working extended hours to meet the growing demands. 

Although no immediate decisions have been taken, councillors say they expect to review proposed changes in the coming months. Their aim will be to balance financial prudence, staff wellbeing, and public expectations—ensuring the region’s cultural calendar remains both vibrant and sustainable.
