Roaring Memories: Ballymoney Museum Revives the Causeway Coast Safari Park
Aug 15, 2024Did you ever have the wild adventure of a lifetime at the Causeway Coast Safari Park in Benvarden? If so, you won't want to miss this exhibition at Ballymoney Museum!
Starting tomorrow, Friday, August 16, the museum will transport visitors back to the days when lions and tigers roamed just outside Ballymoney, making this nostalgia trip a roaring success.
The safari park, Pat and Louise Stephenson's brainchild opened its gates in 1970, becoming the island of Ireland's first national safari park. It welcomed 6,000 eager visitors in just three days in its early days! From elephants to chimpanzees and even a photo booth with a lion cub, it was the place to be for animal lovers and thrill-seekers alike.
But it wasn’t all about exotic creatures. The park also featured fun-filled family attractions like slides, rides, and even trains, all set against the backdrop of a crucial wildlife reserve. Unfortunately, the roaring days ended in 1997, and the park eventually transformed into what is now Benvarden Animal Rescue Kennels.
Thanks to the local community's memories and memorabilia, Ballymoney Museum is breathing new life into the safari park’s legacy. The exhibition is a heartfelt tribute to what was once one of the Causeway Coast's crown jewels. So, if you're feeling nostalgic, head to the museum and relive the wild days of the Causeway Coast Safari Park.
Ballymoney Museum, housed in the Town Hall, is open all year round, Monday to Saturday, 9.30 am–4.30 pm (closed 1 pm–1.30 pm). It's time to take a walk on the wild side—again!
