Drones Suggested To Reduce Halloween Costs
Dec 26, 2024A Causeway Coast and Glens Councillor has raised concerns about the significant cost of running Halloween events in the borough, urging the local authority to explore more cost-effective alternatives.
At a recent council meeting, members were presented with the 2025/26 Tourism Events Programme, which includes four Halloween events across the borough with a proposed budget of £84,438.
DUP Alderman Michelle Knight-McQuillan questioned the increase in costs from the previous year, highlighting the substantial expenditure. "That's a fairly hefty sum of money," she stated. "Has that increased from last year?"
Council officers confirmed a slight increase in costs, primarily attributed to factors such as health and safety measures, traffic management, and policing. They emphasised the stringent scrutiny faced by councils in event planning, necessitating robust safety protocols.
Alderman Knight-McQuillan acknowledged the significant costs associated with event management and the importance of safety. However, she drew a comparison with Christmas events, noting that Halloween costs were considerably higher.
She suggested exploring more environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional fireworks displays, such as drone shows. While officers acknowledged the potential of drone shows, they also pointed out the significant cost of producing a visually impressive display, estimated to be between £16,000 and £26,000.
Officers emphasised their commitment to exploring alternative options and welcomed further suggestions from councillors. They also highlighted the public's strong association of Halloween with fireworks and the desire to maintain this tradition.
