Tourism Team Explores Air Show Cooperation with Newry Mourne Down Council
Mar 18, 2025
Councillor Stirling raised the topic of last year's Air Show under 'any other relevant business' at this evening's Leisure and Development meeting.
"Following the success of last year's Air Show, I would like to request a review of its execution and the development of plans for future events," stated Councillor Stirling.
Councillors were reminded that in January 2021, they approved a Notice of Motion to develop a new International Air Show for 2022 and explore holding the event every two years thereafter. The latest event took place in September 2024.
Pat Mulvenna, Director of Leisure and Development, stated that officers intend to present a report to the June Leisure and Development Committee. "This report will outline the required investment, delivery options, and potential scheduling for 2026, based on the 2021 council decision to hold the event biennially" Ms Mulvenna stated.
Councillors were also informed that the tourism recreation team recently met with officers from Newry Mourne Down District Council to explore opportunities for synergy and cooperation. The council is considering reintroducing its Festival of Flight Air Show.
Councillor Stirling noted that Saturday's events were particularly successful, though weather impacted Sunday's activities. She said that if both days had been like Saturday, "it would have been the best event we'd ever had."
