Wireless network plans revealed for Rathlin Island

Plans have been submitted to Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council regarding establishing a wireless network on Rathlin Island.

The initiative entails setting up a temporary aerial on the handrail encircling the top of the East Lighthouse tower.

Scheduled to stay in position for two years, the aerial will facilitate the wireless network expansion on the island, primarily supporting the LIFE Raft initiative.

This project aims to rejuvenate the seabird colonies on Rathlin Island, bringing advantages to the local Rathlin Community.

The site for the aerial was selected based on various considerations.

The Design and Access Statement explains:

“It gives an elevation that supports the development of a wireless network on the island to aid the LIFE Raft project.

“Other aerials and lights associated with the lighthouse operation are already located on the handrail around the tower's walkway.

“The proposed location will allow simple installation and easy access for maintenance if required via the existing walkway.”
